Bicycles on Amtrak DownEaster TrainThe Amtrak Downeaster provides five round trips per day between Portland and Boston, with NH Seacoast stops in Dover, Durham and Exeter. Bringing bikes on the train is difficult at present. Bikes are only officially allowed on and off the trail in Boston, Portland, and Wells, as these are the three stations with platforms long enough to easily access the baggage car. Some conductors will allow you to bring your bike on one of the passenger cars, but some won't, and it's not official policy to allow bikes in the cars. SABR has approached the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA), which runs the Downeaster, about a pilot program to allow bikes on and off in Durham and Exeter during the summer months. NNEPRA's concern is maintaining on-time performance, and accessing the baggage car adds time. In short, we're working on it! Stay tuned.
