Riding from Portland to Portsmouth last year
Name:  Cari Feingold

Home:  Portsmouth

Occupation: Pediatric Occupational Therapist

What bike (s) are you riding:  Road: Trek Pilot 2.1
Mountain (converted to an around town cruiser): Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo

Favorite bike route:  My go-to route is often right out my door towards Odiorne and then up and down the coast. I never tire of it, but I've recently been favoring an inland route that goes through parts of Hampton Falls, Stratham, Greenland, etc, and appreciating farms and rolling hills. And I also really like Shore Road from Nubble up to Ogunquit in the off-season. And today I discovered some backroads of South Berwick that I can't wait to go back and explore further. (Sorry, couldn't pick just one!)

Most prized bike accessory:  I'm not too tech savvy, but I rely on my little bike computer all the time. It only gives me speed, time, and distance, but that allows me to push myself a little further and a little faster.

Helpful hint for other women bicyclists:  If you're new, just get out there - you don't know what you can do until you try!  The cycling community is incredibly welcoming and supportive.  Everyone wants you to enjoy what they have already discovered, and they are patient and encouraging.  Two years ago I was struggling to learn to shift, figure out how to clip into my pedals, and be able to drink from my water bottle while riding.  By the end of the season, I completed my first century. Just start pedaling, and see where it takes you.

Why you bicycle:  I bike because it makes me happy. I like the physical movement - the idea that my own strength can take me so many miles. And I can't help but smile at all the beautiful scenery that we can't appreciate enough through a car window - it's not just the sights, but the feel of the breeze and the smell of the salt air.  Biking also occasionally lets me rationalize eating ice cream for dinner.
