What do I need to do to improve?
One of the most important things I have learned in my own training over the years starting as early as elementary school to high school and college where I was more competitive was your body gets tired and you need to have rest days. Rest days don’t always mean sleep the day away. Get moving, take a walk with your favorite four legged friend or borrow one. How you rest and recover, has 100 percent of how much stronger you will come back into your next training session.
Ways to improve recovery:
Sleep is an important part of the recovery process and is one area where every one of us can improve. You ask 9/10 people how much sleep you need a night, 9/10 will say 8 hours. Moral of the story; get the rest you need for you and your recovery.
Need more Downtime each day?
You may need to block out time on your schedule, just as you would your workouts, but try to do something without too many structured goals. Even a few minutes of this joyful rest each day will make a big difference for your health, your personality and, yes, your running, your biking, your hiking and in everything you do!
Downtime recovery tool kit:
• Magic stick
• Foam roller
• Good tunes – to help rest and relax your mindset
• Schedule in recovery time and days and what you will do on recovery days
• IE: At home yoga 60 minutes, foam roll, trigger point/deep tissue massage
• Move recovery days around as your body needs, listen to your body it knows you best
• Create your own tool kit and use what works best for you.
Athletes Tip #2 Do not allow myself to get discouraged over improvements, improvements are me listening to my body's needs and becoming stronger for it.
