SABR HistorySeacoast Area Bicycles Routes Inc. (SABR) was originally formed in May 1992 by a small group of individuals living in and around the seacoast region of New Hampshire following the 1992 passage of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). SABR was officially recognized as a New Hampshire non-profit corporation on 29 June 1993. For the past decade SABR has been working with municipal and regional planners to develop and secure funding for the Seacoast-Great Bay bicycle transportation network. We are committed to the development of a network of safe and convenient bicycle routes connecting the seacoast of New Hampshire and the city of Portsmouth with the Pease International Tradeport and the towns of Durham, Dover, Exeter, Greenland, the Hamptons, Newington, Newmarket, Rye, Rochester, and Stratham. We crossed our first hurdle in the development of a regional bicycle transportation network in seacoast New Hampshire with the construction and opening of the $800,000 Rockingham Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge in the fall of 1999. This bridge provides a safe and efficient link between Portsmouth and Pease International Tradeport. The success of this project was due to the cooperative efforts of SABR, the city of Portsmouth, Pease International Tradeport, the town of Newington, the Portsmouth Rotary Club, The William Penn Foundation, Rockingham Planning Commisssion, and several other businesses and individuals in the Seacoast region. Our success relies fundamentally on a community based approach. SABR works to build relationships within communities in order to improve the effectiveness of the region's transportation system. We currently enjoy a strong relationship with planners and councilors in the municipalities in the Seacoast-Great Bay Region, regional planners working with the Rockingham and Strafford Regional Planning Commissions, Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, the East Coast Greenway Committee, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator, Wildcat Transit, and the UNH Office of Sustainability Programs. We also serve as a member on the New Hampshire Department of Transportation's "Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Advisory Board" and the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce - ad-hoc transportation committee. For more information on our activities over the years, you can read a selection of newspaper articles dealing with SABR and cycling routes in the Seacoast/Great Bay region. SABR has also received a few awards over the years. |
