Safe Cycling Clinic
Have you thought about riding your bike to work, or maybe the the store or library, but the thought of riding around car traffic is scary? Or maybe you're just returning to biking as an adult and are unsure of your skills. What's stopping you from goinganywhere you want to go by bike?
CyclingSavvy is the national bicycle curriculum dedicated to empowering cyclists to go anywhere they need to go, right now! The full 3-part course gives you both the knowledge and the skills to get around by bike. We all prefer quiet streets with low traffic when we can get them, but what if you have that one busy intersection you don't know quite how to handle? (And who doesn't have one of those?) What do you do when the bike lane ends? CyclingSavvy can teach you!
Thanks to the generous support and effort of Commute Smart Seacost,Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes (SABR), and thePortsmouthNaval Shipyard, Portsmouth and Kittery area bicyclists now will have an opportunity to experience CyclingSavvy, the empowering and fun cycling confidence course.
As the weather finally warms up (we have faith as we are writing this in mid-March!), and people begin thinking about getting back on their bikes, we hope you will consider expanding your horizons (literally!) and getting more confident in getting anywhere you need to go by bike, by becoming a Savvy Cyclist with CyclingSavvy!
CyclingSavvy was brought to Maine, and now to New Hampshire, by John Brooking, a bike commuter in the Portland area, and a board member with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. John will be assisted by a CyclingSavvy instructor from Providence RI, Bill Desantis. Bill is a traffic engineer who also serves on the National Committee of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. (They publish a little guide some of you may have heard of, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices?) You can read more about Johnand Bill at the CyclingSavvy site.
Just in time for National Bike to Work Week (May 12-16), bicyclists can choose from two different options:
